Saint Mary's College Dance Company (SMCDC): an advanced modern dance technique class and choreography workshop.  Students work on dance technique through various movement combinations, compose and rehearse student choreography, guest choreography, and Davalos' choreography.  The company tours the Bay Area and travels to campuses hosting the American College Dance Festival.  They perform on campus for both Campus Ministry (Liturgical Dance) and the Performing Arts Department.  Courses included in this area are Dance Production, Dance Company and Apprentice Dance Company.  The apprentice company works at a beginning and/or intermediate level.
Dance History: courses include Dance History I: Ballet and Dance History II: Modern and Contemporary Dance.  The work is a two semester process involving the development of concert dance from the roots of ballet to the modern world to current practices.
Dance Criticism and Analysis: courses include Dance in Performance and Exploring the Performing Arts, (this course is team-taught).  Dance in Performance students' travel to the Bay Area to see several concerts throughout the semester and discuss the work using the tools of criticism and analysis.  In Exploring the Arts, the professors choose a topic for discussion, e.g., Romanticism, Modernism, and relate all of the performing arts to the topic.
Dance Appreciation: courses include Perceiving the Performing Arts, SMarts, and various technique classes, e.g., Introduction to Dance, Beginning and Intermediate Modern Dance. Technique classes cover various styles of dance and students attend at least two dance concerts in the Bay Area.  Perceiving the Arts is a team-taught course in which students develop an appreciation and a deeper understanding of the performing arts through lecture and by attending Bay Area productions.
Dance Theory:  courses in choreography, technique, and performance taught during various January Terms.  Students explore the theory behind the art of making dances, discuss the choreographic process in relation to each others' works and those of professional concerts seen as a class.  Other topics of theory include Laban Movement Analysis, Bartenieff Fundamentals, dance and video technology.  The term culminates in a showing of student choreography.
Collegiate Seminar:  courses include Greek Thought; Roman, Early Christian, Medieval Thought; Renaissance 17th and 18th Century Thought, 19th and 20th Century Thought.
These courses explore the Western Canon within a chronological timeframe.  The Seminar leader is not expected to be an expert in the material, but to facilitate a discussion of the texts.  Essay writing is the other critical component of the course.
